عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ قَالَ:
تَزَوَّجَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَهِيَ جَارِيَةٌ تَلْعَبُ مَعَ الْجَوَارِي، فَجَاءَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَدَعَوْا لَهُ بِالْبَرَكَةِ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي لَمْ أَتَزَوَّجْ مِنْ نَشَاطٍ بِي، وَلَكِنْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ كُلَّ سَبَبٍ وَنَسَبٍ مُنْقَطِعٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَّا سَبَبِي وَنَسَبِي، فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ نَبِيِّ اللهِ ﷺ سَبَبٌ وَنَسَبٌ

ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb married Umm Kulthūm, the daughter of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, while she was a young girl playing with the girls. Then he came to his companions, and they prayed for blessing for him. He said: "I did not marry out of any desire of mine, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Every cause (sabab) and lineage (nasab) will be cut off on the Day of Resurrection except my cause and my lineage.' So I wished that there be between me and the Prophet of Allah ﷺ a cause and a lineage."
