✧ The question of the People of the Book

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي نَمْلَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ،
أَنَّ أَبَا نَمْلَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ بَيْنَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، هَلْ تَتَكَلَّمُ هَذِهِ الْجِنَازَةُ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " اللهُ أَعْلَمُ ". فَقَالَ الْيَهُودِيُّ: إِنَّهَا تَتَكَلَّمُ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا حَدَّثَكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَلَا تُصَدِّقُوهُمْ وَلَا تُكَذِّبُوهُمْ، وَقُولُوا: آمَنَّا بِاللهِ وَكُتُبِهِ؛ فَإِنْ كَانَ بَاطِلًا لَمْ تُصَدِّقُوهُ، وَإِنْ كَانَ حَقًّا لَمْ تُكَذِّبُوهُ
Translation
✧ Abu Namlah informed him that while he was sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ, a man from the protected people came to him and said, "O Muhammad, does this corpse speak?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "God knows best." The Jew said, "It speaks." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Whatever the People of the Book tell you, neither believe them nor disbelieve them, but say, 'We believe in God and His Books.' If it is false, you will not have believed it; if it is true, you will not have disbelieved it."
