Translation
✧ Al-Mustawrid b. ʿAlqama was in a gathering with Farwa b. Nawfal al-Ashjaʿī. A man said: There is no jizya on the Magians. Al-Mustawrid said: You say this when the Messenger of God ﷺ took it from the Magians of Hajar! By God, what you have concealed is more wicked than what you have shown! He took him until he entered upon ʿAlī, who was sitting in a pavilion in a palace. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, this man claims that there is no jizya on the Magians, and you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ took it from the Magians of Hajar! ʿAlī said: Al-badā, meaning: Sit down. By God, there is no one on earth today more knowledgeable about that than I. The Magians were People of a Book they knew and knowledge they studied. One of their leaders drank wine and became drunk, and fell upon his sister. A group of Muslims saw him. When morning came, his sister said: You did such-and-such to her, and a group saw you who will not cover for you. He summoned the greedy ones and gave them [gifts], then said to them: You know that Adam married his sons to his daughters. Those who had seen him came and said: Woe to the farthest one! On your back there is a punishment from God! Those who were with him killed them. Then a woman came and said to him: Rather, I saw you! He said to her: Woe to the prostitute of Banū so-and-so! She said: Yes, by God, she was a prostitute then she repented. So he killed her. Then what was in their hearts and their books was taken away by night, and nothing remained sound with them."
