أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ، قَالَ
: كَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ إِلَى عَدِيِّ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ، يَسْأَلُ الْحَسَنَ: لِمَ خُلِّيَ بَيْنَ الْمَجُوسِ وَبَيْنَ نِكَاحِ الْأُمَّهَاتِ وَالْأَخَوَاتِ ؟ فَسَأَلَهُ، فَقَالَ: " الشِّرْكُ الَّذِي هُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، وَإِنَّمَا خُلِّيَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْجِزْيَةِ
Translation
✧ Umar b. Abd al-Aziz wrote to Adi b. Artat, asking al-Hasan: Why were the Magians left to marry mothers and sisters? So he asked him, and he said: “The polytheism they are upon is greater than that, and they were only left to it for the sake of the jizya.”
