✧ Washing and shrouding a disbeliever

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ:

تُوُفِّيَ أَبُو رَجُلٍ وَكَانَ يَهُودِيًّا، فَلَمْ يَتْبَعْهُ ابْنُهُ، فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: وَمَا عَلَيْهِ لَوْ غَسَّلَهُ، وَاتَّبَعَهُ، وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ حَيًّا - يَقُولُ: دَعَا لَهُ مَا كَانَ الْأَبُ حَيًّا. قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: ﴿فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ عَدُوٌّ لِلهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ ﴾يَقُولُ: " لَمَّا مَاتَ عَلَى كُفْرِهِ

Translation

✧ The father of a man died, and he was a Jew, so his son did not follow him. That was mentioned to Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Abbas said: “What harm would it have done him if he had washed him, followed him, and sought forgiveness for him while he was alive?”—meaning he would have supplicated for him while the father was alive. He said: “Then Ibn Abbas recited: ‘But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he disassociated himself from him,’ saying: ‘when he died upon his disbelief.’”
