machine translationHe said: On this topic there are narrations from ʿAlī, Buraydah, Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAwf, Abū Razīn al-ʿUqaylī, Sawdah bt. Zamʿah and Ibn ʿAbbās. Abū ʿĪsā said: The hadith of al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās is a good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith. It has been narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAwf al-Muzanī, from the Prophet ﷺ. It has also been narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Sinān b. ʿAbdullāh al-Juhanī, from his paternal aunt, from the Prophet ﷺ. And it has been narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ. He said: I asked Muḥammad about these narrations, and he said: The most sound thing on this topic is what Ibn ʿAbbās narrated from al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ. Muḥammad said: It is possible that Ibn ʿAbbās heard it from al-Faḍl and from others, from the Prophet ﷺ, then narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal report and did not mention the one from whom he heard it. Abū ʿĪsā said: More than one hadith has been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ on this topic. The practice accords with this among the people of knowledge from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others. Thus say al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad and Isḥāq; they hold that Hajj may be performed on behalf of the deceased. Mālik said: If he instructed in his will that Hajj be performed on his behalf, it is performed on his behalf. Some of them have permitted Hajj to be performed on behalf of a living person if he is old or in a condition in which he is unable to perform Hajj. This is the view of Ibn al-Mubārak and al-Shāfiʿī.
