machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: Qutaybah said: Ḥammād said: I do not know whether this is from the words of the Prophet ﷺ or from the words of Abū Umāmah. He said: There is a report on this topic from Anas. Abū ʿĪsā said: This is a good (ḥasan) hadith, though its chain is not so firm. The practice according to this among most of the people of knowledge, from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and those after them, is that the two ears are part of the head. This is what Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad and Isḥāq say. Some of the people of knowledge said: What faces forward of the two ears is part of the face, and what faces backward is part of the head. Isḥāq said: I prefer that one wipe their front part along with the face and their back part along with the head. Al-Shāfiʿī said: They are a separate sunnah in themselves; one wipes them with fresh water.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationThis hadith is defective (maʿlūl).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39

machine translationSinān has few hadiths, and I hope that there is no harm in him.

machine translationḤammād b. Zayd narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Shammākhī, who was in Syria and was not approved of, narrated it from Sulaymān b. Ḥarb, from Ḥammād b. Zayd, from Abān b. Taghlib, from Shahr, from Asmāʾ bint Yazīd. But the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is from Ḥammād b. Zayd, from Sinān b. Rabīʿah, from Shahr, from Abū Umāmah.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationḤammād b. Zayd narrates it from Sinān b. Rabīʿah, from Shahr, and Ḥammād b. Salamah differed from him, and narrated some of the wording from Sinān b. Rabīʿah, from Anas. Sulaymān b. Ḥarb said regarding this hadith, from Ḥammād b. Zayd, that the saying "the two ears are part of the head" is from the words of Abū Umāmah, not raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ), and that is correct.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

    machine translationInterpolated (mudraj).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThere is no hadith among them, meaning "the two ears are part of the head", except that it has a defect.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39

machine translationIt is only from the words of Abū Umāmah; whoever says otherwise has altered it.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationRaising it to the Prophet is an error (wahm). Shahr b. Ḥawshab is not strong, and Sulaymān b. Ḥarb, who is trustworthy (thiqah), reported it as a statement of the Companion (mawqūf).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThis is mursal, and it was narrated from him in a connected form from Abū Umāmah, from the Prophet ﷺ, but that is not authentic. Abū Bakr b. Abī Maryam is weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThis is a hadith whose chain is not so firm.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 39
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationGood (ḥasan); its chain is not so firm.
