Notes

machine translationIsḥāq b. Manṣūr narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī informed us, from Sufyān, from Abū Isḥāq, from Nājiyah, that Abū Jahl said to the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned something similar. He did not mention ʿAlī in it, and this is more authentic (aṣaḥḥ).

machine translationAl-Thawrī narrates it from Abū Isḥāq, from Nājiyah b. Kaʿb, from ʿAlī; this was stated by Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām from al-Thawrī. Others narrate it from al-Thawrī as a mursal report, not mentioning ʿAlī in it, and this is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version. It was also said, from Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām, from Shaybān, but that is not sound; it is only Sufyān. Isrāʾīl narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Maysarah, as a mursal report from the Prophet ﷺ. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Saʿdān narrated to us: Shuʿayb b. Ayyūb narrated to us: Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Abū Isḥāq, from Nājiyah b. Kaʿb, from ʿAlī, who said: Abū Jahl said to the Messenger of God ﷺ, "We do not call you a liar, but we deny what you have brought."
