حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ أَنَّ أَبَا ثَعْلَبَةَ قَالَ:

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي أُرْسِلُ كَلْبِي فَيَأْخُذُ الصَّيْدَ ؟ قَالَ: إِذَا أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الْمُعَلَّمَ فَذَكَرْتَ اسْمَ اللهِ فَأَخَذَ فَكُلْ، وَإِذَا أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِمُعَلَّمٍ فَأَخَذَ فَإِنْ أَدْرَكْتَ ذَكَاتَهُ فَكُلْ، وَإِنْ لَمْ تُدْرِكْ ذَكَاتَهُ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ

Translation

✧ I said: O Messenger of God, I send out my dog and it catches game? He said: 'If you send out your trained dog and mention God's name, and it catches, then eat. If you send out your dog that is not trained and it catches, then if you reach it while it is still alive and slaughter it, eat; if you do not reach it alive, do not eat.'
