حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ
إِنِّي مَرَرْتُ بِمَسْجِدٍ مِنْ مَسَاجِدِ بَنِي حَنِيفَةَ فَسَمِعْتُهُمْ يَقْرَءُونَ شَيْئًا لَمْ يُنْزِلْهُ اللهُ الطَّاحِنَاتُ طَحْنَا الْعَاجِنَاتُ عَجْنًا الْخَابِزَاتُ خَبْزًا اللَّاقِمَاتُ لَقْمًا قَالَ فَقَدّمَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ابْنَ النَّوَّاحَةَ إِمَامَهُمْ فَقَتَلَهُ وَاسْتَكْثَرَ الْبَقِيَّةَ وَقَالَ «لَا أَجْزُرُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ الشَّيْطَانَ سَيِّرُوهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ حَتَّى يَرْزُقَهُمُ اللهُ تَوْبَةً أَوْ يُفْنِيهِمُ الطَّاعُونُ»

✧ ʿUmar (?) said: I passed by one of the mosques of Banū Ḥanīfah and heard them reciting something God had not sent down: the grinders grinding, the kneaders kneading, the bakers baking, the morsel-eaters eating morsels. He said: So Ibn Masʿūd put Ibn al-Nawwāḥah forward as their leader and killed him, and found the rest to be many, and said: “I will not slaughter them today for the devil. Send them to Syria so that God may grant them repentance or the plague may destroy them.”
