حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ

أَنْ يَنْعَى عُمَرَ فَخَنَقَتْهُ الْعَبْرَةُ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ كَانَ حِصْنًا حَصِينًا لِلْإِسْلَامِ يَدْخُلُ فِيهِ وَلَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ فَانْهَدَمَ الْحِصْنُ ثُمَّ نَعَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاسْتُخْلِفَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَلَمْ نَأْلُ عَنْ خَيْرِهَا فَوْقُ

✧ That he announced the death of ʿUmar, and weeping choked him once or twice. Then he said, “ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was a strong fortress for Islam, into which people entered and from which they did not leave. The fortress has now crumbled.” Then he announced his death, and then said, “And ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān was appointed caliph, and we have not been remiss concerning the best of it—that is above.”
