حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا عَبْدُ السَّلَامِ بْنُ حَرْبٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ قَالَ

كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ وَهُوَ يَمْشِي فَإِذَا مَرَرْنَا بِالسَّجْدَةِ كَبَّرَ وَكَبَّرْنَا وَسَجَدَ وَسَجَدْنَا إِيمَاءً يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ وَيَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَنَقُولُ وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ «وَزَعَمَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ» أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ بِهِمْ

Translation

✧ We used to recite to Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī while he was walking. When we came to a prostration verse, he said Allahu Akbar and we said Allahu Akbar, and he prostrated and we prostrated, gesturing. He would raise his head and say, 'Peace be upon you,' and we would say, 'And upon you be peace.' Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān claimed that Abdullah used to do that with them.
