حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عِقَالٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطَّرَائِفِيُّ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ هُودِ بْنِ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ شَدَّادًا أَبَا عَمَّارٍ يَقُولُ
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ يَقُولُ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا يَلْتَمِسُ الْخَيْرَ وَالذِّكْرَ مَا لَهُ؟ قَالَ «لَا شَيْءَ لَهُ» يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ لَا يَقْبَلُ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ إِلَّا مَا خَلَصَ لَهُ وَابْتُغِيَ بِهِ وَجْهُهُ»

✧ I heard Abu Umamah say: A man came to the Messenger of God and said, “O Messenger of God, what do you think of a man who seeks good and reputation—what is for him?” He said, “Nothing for him,” saying that three times. “God ﷻ does not accept any deed except what is sincere for Him and by which His face is sought.”
