حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ رَجَاءِ بْنِ حَيْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهِمْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي الشَّهَادَةَ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا ثُمَّ بَعَثَ جَيْشًا آخَرَ فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهِمْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي الشَّهَادَةَ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» ثُمَّ الثَّالِثَةَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَتَيْتُكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقُلْتُ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَأْمُرْنِي بِعَمَلٍ قَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّوْمِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مِثْلَ لَهُ وَلَا عِدْلَ لَهُ» قَالَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ «قَدْ رُزِقَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ خَيْرًا»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military detachment, and I went out among them. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to grant me martyrdom.” He said, “O Allah, grant them safety and grant them spoils.” So we remained safe and obtained spoils. Then he sent another army, and I went out among them. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to grant me martyrdom.” He said, “O Allah, grant them safety and grant them spoils.” Then the third time was the same, so I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I came to you three times asking you to pray for martyrdom for me, and you said, ‘O Allah, grant them safety and grant them spoils,’ so we remained safe and obtained spoils. O Messenger of Allah, command me with a deed.” He said, “You must observe fasting, for it has no like and no equal.” Abū Umāma said, “He was granted much good because of that.”
