حَدَّثَنَا أَسْلَمُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الشَّعْثَاءِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ فَقَالَ
مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ قُلْتُ أَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَتَبْسُطُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًى بِمَا يَطْلُبُ وَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ «كُنَّا نَمْسَحُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ لِلْمُسَافِرِ وَيَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ لِلْمُقِيمِ»

✧ What has brought you? I said: I seek knowledge. He said: The angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks. And I asked him about wiping over the leather socks. He said: "We used to wipe during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ for three days and their nights for the traveler, and a day and a night for the resident."
