al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (al-Tabarani) 7338

✧ Safwan b. Umayyah b. Khalaf al-Jumahi, known as Abu Wahb, came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the day of the conquest of Mecca. He delayed him for four months and witnessed the Battle of Hunayn while he was still a polytheist. Then he embraced Islam after that and was martyred in the killing of Uthman.

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُعَلَّى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

نِمْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَاسْتُلَّ إِزَارِي مِنْ تَحْتِي فَأَدْرَكْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ تُقْطَعَ يَدَهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هِي لَهُ قَالَ «فَهَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ»

✧ I slept in the mosque, and my waist-wrapper was stolen from beneath me. I caught the thief and brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He ordered that his hand be cut off. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is his.” He said, “Why not before you brought him to me?”
