وَبِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ قَالَ
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَنَا «إِنَّ اسْمَ الرَّجُلِ الْمُؤْمِنِ فِي الْكُتُبِ الْكَرْمُ مِنْ أَجْلِ مَا كَرَّمَهُ اللهُ عَلَى الْخَلِيقَةِ وَإِنَّكُمْ تَدْعُونَ الْحَائِطَ مِنَ الْعِنَبِ الْكَرْمَ وَإِنَّمَا اسْمُهُ الْحَفْرُ وَالرَّجُلُ هُوَ الْكَرْمُ»
Translation
Chain of narrators
- Samurah b. Jundub
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ used to tell us: “The name of the believing man in the [earlier] books is al-karm (generosity), because of what God has honored him with over creation. But you call the wall of grapevines al-karm, whereas its name is al-ḥafr (the trench), and it is the man who is al-karm.”
