✧ There occurred a dispute among the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf until they threw stones at each other. This was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, so he went out to reconcile them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed until Bilāl called the adhān for prayer. Then he came to Abū Bakr and said to him: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been delayed; will you lead the prayer?” Abū Bakr said: “Yes.” So he made the iqāmah and Abū Bakr ؓ stepped forward and said the takbīr. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared, and the people clapped for Abū Bakr, but he would not turn around during his prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved through the people until Abū Bakr heard his footsteps behind him, so he began to step back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Stay where you are, O Abū Bakr, and lead us in prayer.” Abū Bakr raised his hands to the sky to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished, he said: “O Abū Bakr, what prevented you, when I commanded you to lead the people in prayer, from leading them?” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, it was not appropriate for the son of Abū Quḥāfah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said: “You raise your hands to the sky?” He said: “I praised Allah when you commanded me to lead you in prayer.” Then he turned to the people and said: “O people, what is the matter with you that when something occurred during your prayer you resorted to clapping? Clapping is only for women. If something occurs to someone during his prayer, let him say subḥān Allāh, and the one next to him should turn to him.”
