✧ My father was a companion of Abu al-Darda' in Damascus. He told me that there was a man among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah. He was a solitary man who rarely sat with people; he was always praying, and when he finished, he engaged in glorifying God, declaring His oneness, and magnifying Him until he returned to his family. One day he passed by us while we were with Abu al-Darda', and he greeted us. Abu al-Darda' said to him, "A word that benefits us, by God, and does not harm you." He said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ sent out a military detachment, and I was among them. A man came and sat in the gathering where the Messenger of God ﷺ was, and he said to a man beside him, 'If only you had seen us when we met the enemy! So-and-so thrust at so-and-so, and he said, "Take it, and I am the Ghifari youth!" What do you think?'" He said, "I think he has nullified his reward." Another man said, "I see no harm." They argued about that until the Messenger of God ﷺ heard it, and he said, "Glorified be Allah! There is no harm in being rewarded and praised." Abu al-Darda' was delighted by that and kept saying, "You heard this from the Messenger of God ﷺ?" He kept saying, "Yes," until I said—while he was lifting his head to him—"He will surely mount his knees [out of eagerness]."
