al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (al-Tabarani) 5383

✧ Saad b. Ubadah al-Ansari, then al-Khazraji, a follower from Badr and Uhud, a captain, known as Abu Thabit, he stayed in Sham and passed away there.

حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ صُبَيْحٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالِدَتِي كَانَتْ تَتَصَدَّقُ وتُنْفِقُ مِنْ مَالِي فِي حَيَاتِهَا فَقَدْ مَاتَتْ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ عَنْهَا أَوْ أَعْتَقْتُ عَنْهَا نَرْجُو لَهَا شَيْئًا؟ فقَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دُلَّنِي عَلَى صَدَقَةٍ قَالَ «اسْقِ الْمَاءَ» قَالَ الْحَسَنُ فَمَا زَالَتْ جِرَارُ سَعْدٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ بَعْدُ

✧ I said, “O Messenger of God, my mother used to give charity and spend from my wealth during her lifetime, and she has now died. If I give charity on her behalf or free a slave on her behalf, can we hope for something for her?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “O Messenger of God, guide me to a charity.” He said, “Provide water.” Al-Hasan said, “Saʿd’s water jars remained in Madinah after that.”
