حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْمُؤَدِّبُ ثنا هَوْذَةُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ ثنا عَوْفٌ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَسْلَمُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ عَوْفٍ عَنْ مَيْمُونٍ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ وَزَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ حِينَ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْزُوَ «إِنَّهُ لَابُدَّ مِنْ أَنْ تُقِيمَ أَوْ أُقِيمَ» فَخَلَفَهُ فَقَالَ نَاسٌ مَا خَلَفَهُ إِلَّا لِشَيْءٍ كَرِهَهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَلِيًّا فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَتَضَاحَكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا عَلِيُّ أَمَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ نَبِيٌّ بَعْدِي»

✧ That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali when he wanted to go on a military expedition: "It is necessary that either you stay or I stay." So he left him behind. Some people said: "He only left him behind because of something he disliked." That reached Ali, so he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He laughed, then said: "O Ali, are you not pleased that you are to me in the position of Harun to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?"
