حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ مُسَافِرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنِ ابْنِ السَّبَّاقِ أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مَقْتَلِ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ فَإِذَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ عَنْدَهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّ عُمَرَ أَتَانِي فَقَالَ

لِي إِنَّ الْقَتْلَ قَدِ اسْتَحَرَّ بِأَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ مِنْ قُرَّاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَسْتَحِرَّ الْقَتْلُ بِالْقُرَّاءِ فِي مَوَاطِنَ فَيَذْهَبُ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَا يُوعَى وَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَأْمُرَ بِجَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ فَقُلْتُ لِعُمَرَ كَيْفَ أَفْعَلُ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ عُمَرُ هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُرَاجِعُنِي فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي بِذَلِكَ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهِ الَّذِي رَأَى عُمَرُ فَقَالَ لِزَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ وَعُمَرُ جَالِسٌ عَنْدَهُ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُ إِنَّكَ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ لَا أَتَّهِمُكَ وَكُنْتَ تُكْتَبُ الْوَحْيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَتَبَّعِ الْقُرْآنَ فَاجْمَعْهُ فَقَالَ زَيْدٌ فَوَاللهِ لَوْ كَلَّفُونِي نَقْلَ جَبَلٍ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ مَا كَانَ أَثْقَلَ عَلَيَّ مِمَّا أَمَرَنِي بِهِ مِنْ جَمَعِ الْقُرْآنِ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُرَاجِعُنِي حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ لَهُ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَقُمْتُ فَتَتَبَّعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ أَجْمَعُهُ مِنَ الرِّقَاعِ وَالْأَكْتَافِ وَالْأَقْتَابِ وَالْعُسُبِ وَصُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ آخِرَ سُورَةِ التَّوْبَةِ مَعَ خُزَيْمَةَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ لَمِ أَجِدْهَا مَعَ أَحَدٍ غَيْرِهِ {لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ} «وَكَانَتِ الصُّحُفُ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ حَيَاتَهُ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ ﷻ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ ؓ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ حَتَّى جَمَعَ عُثْمَانُ الْقُرْآنَ مِنْهَا فِي الْمَصَاحِفِ»

✧ He said to me: “Killing has intensified among the people of al-Yamama from among the Quran reciters of the Muslims, and I fear that killing will intensify among the reciters in other places, and much of the Quran will be lost, not preserved. I think you should order the collection of the Quran.” I said to Umar: “How can I do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?” Umar said: “By Allah, it is good.” He kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to it, and I saw in it what Umar saw. He said to Zayd b. Thabit, while Umar was sitting with him, not speaking: “You are a young man, and I do not accuse you. You used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So pursue the Quran and compile it.” Zayd said: “By Allah, if they had tasked me with moving a mountain, it would not have been heavier upon me than what he ordered me to do of compiling the Quran.” I said: “How can you do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?” He said: “By Allah, it is good.” Abu Bakr kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to that to which He had opened the chest of Abu Bakr and Umar. So I got up and pursued the Quran, compiling it from palm stalks, thin white stones, pieces of leather, date-palm branches, and the memories of men, until I found the last part of Surah al-Tawbah with Khuzaymah b. Thabit al-Ansari, not finding it with anyone else: “There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves.” The sheets remained with Abu Bakr ؓ during his life until Allah took him, then with Umar ؓ until Allah took him, then with Hafsah bt. Umar until Uthman compiled the Quran from them into the codices.
