حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنْبَاعِ رَوْحُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ لِأَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ مِنْ أَوَّلِ مَنْ كَتَبَ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ فَقَالَ
أَخْبَرَتْنِي الشِّفَاءُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرَاتِ الْأُوَلِ أَنَّ لَبِيدَ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ وَعَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ قَدِمَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَأَتَيَا الْمَسْجِدَ فَوَجَدَا عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ فَقَالَا يَا ابْنَ الْعَاصِ اسْتَأْذِنْ لَنَا عَلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقَالَ أَنْتُمَا وَاللهِ أَصَبْتُمَا اسْمَهُ هُوَ الْأَمِيرُ وَنَحْنُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَدَخَلَ عَمرٌو عَلَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ مَا هَذَا؟ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ الْأَمِيرُ وَنَحْنُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَجَرَى الْكِتَابُ مِنْ يَوْمَئِذٍ

✧ Al-Shifa' bt. Abd Allah, who was among the first emigrant women, informed me that Labid b. Rabi'ah and Adi b. Hatim came to Madinah and went to the mosque. They found Amr b. al-As and said, "O Ibn al-As, seek permission for us to see the Commander of the Believers." He said, "By God, you two have hit upon his name: he is the commander and we are the believers." Amr went in to Umar and said, "Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers." Umar said to him, "What is this?" He said, "You are the commander and we are the believers." And the title has been used from that day on.
