حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي طَلْحَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ يَعُودُهُ قَالَ فَوَجَدْنَا عَنْدَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ قَالَ فَدَعَا أَبُو طَلْحَةَ إِنْسَانًا فَنَزَعَ نَمَطًا كَانَ تَحْتَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ لِمَ تَنْزِعُهُ؟ قَالَ لِأَنَّ فِيهِ تَصَاوِيرَ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِيهَا مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَهُ فَقَالَ سَهْلٌ أَوَ لَمْ يَقُلْ «إِلَّا مَا كَانَ رَقْمًا فِي ثَوْبٍ؟» فَقَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ لِنَفْسِي

✧ Al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us, from Mālik, from Abū al-Naḍr, the freed slave of ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, that he entered upon Abū Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī to visit him. He said: We found Sahl b. Ḥunayf with him. He said: Abū Ṭalḥah called a person, and he removed a coverlet that was beneath him. Sahl b. Ḥunayf said to him, “Why do you remove it?” He said, “Because it contains images, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about them what you know.” Sahl said, “Did he not say, ‘Except what is embroidery in a cloth’?” He said, “Yes, but it is more pleasing to myself.”
