✧ We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of the conquest of Makkah toward the graveyards. The Messenger of God ﷺ sat down by a grave, and we saw him as if he were conversing privately. The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up wiping tears from his eyes. ʿUmar, may God have mercy on him, met him—he was the first of us—and said: “With my father and mother as ransom for you, what makes you weep?” He said: “I asked my Lord, exalted be He, for permission to visit my mother’s grave. She was a mother, and she had a right over me that I ask forgiveness for her, but He forbade me.” Then he gestured to us to sit, so we sat. He said: “I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so whoever of you wishes to visit, let him visit. I had forbidden you from the meat of sacrificial animals beyond three days, so eat and store whatever you wish. I had forbidden you from certain vessels, and I have commanded you concerning vessels, so soak [in them], for vessels do not make anything lawful or unlawful, and avoid every intoxicant.”
