حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ صَيَّادٍ أَنَّ عَطَاءَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ «كُنَّا نُضَحِّي بِالشَّاةِ الْوَاحِدَةِ يَذْبَحُهَا الرَّجُلُ عَنْهُ وَعَنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ ثُمَّ تَبَاهَى النَّاسُ بَعْدُ فَصَارَتْ مُبَاهَاةً»

✧ Al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us from Mālik, from ʿUmārah b. Ṣayyād, that ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār informed him that Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī informed him, saying: “We used to sacrifice a single sheep that a man would slaughter on behalf of himself and his household; then later people began to vie with one another, and it became a matter of ostentation.”
