حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ ثنا يَحْيَى عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ثنا قَيْسٌ عَنْ خَبَّابِ بْنِ الْأَرَتِّ قَالَ

شَكَوْنَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ بُرْدَةً لَهُ فِي ظِلِّ الْكَعْبَةِ فَقُلْنَا أَلَا تَسْتَنْصِرُ لَنَا أَلَا تَدْعُو لَنَا فَقَالَ «قَدْ كَانَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ يُؤْخَذُ الرَّجُلُ فَيُمْشَطُ بِأَمْشَاطِ الْحَدِيدِ مَا دُونَ لَحْمِهِ وَعَظْمِهِ فَمَا يُصَدُّ ذَلِكَ عَنْ دِينِهِ وَاللهِ لَيُتَمَّنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ حَتَّى يَسِيرَ الرَّاكِبُ مِنْ صَنْعَاءَ إِلَى حَضْرَمَوْتَ لَا يَخَافُ إِلَّا اللهَ أَوِ الذِّئْبَ عَلَى غَنَمِهِ وَلَكِنَّكُمْ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ»

Translation

✧ We complained to the Prophet ﷺ while he was using a cloak of his as a pillow in the shade of the Kaʿbah. We said, “Will you not seek victory for us? Will you not supplicate for us?” He said, “Among those before you, a man would be taken and combed with iron combs through what was beneath his flesh and bone, and that did not turn him away from his religion. By God, this matter will be completed until a rider travels from Sanʿaʾ to Hadramawt fearing none but God—or the wolf for his sheep. But you are in haste.”
