✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: H And Abu Zur'a 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Amr al-Dimashqi narrated to us: Adam narrated to us: Shayban narrated to us: H And al-Husayn b. Ishaq al-Tustari narrated to us: 'Uthman b. Abi Shayba narrated to us: al-Hasan b. Musa al-Ashyab narrated to us: Shayban narrated to us, from Layth, from 'Abd al-Malik b. Abi Bashir, from Hafsa bt. Sirin, from Umm Sulaym, the mother of Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a woman dies and they want to wash her, let them begin with her belly and wipe it gently. If she is not pregnant, then if she is pregnant, do not move her. If you want to wash her, begin with her lower half. Place a concealing garment over her private area. Then take a piece of cotton and wash her, and do it well. Then insert your hand under the garment and wipe her with cotton three times, wiping her well before performing her ablution. Then perform her ablution with water containing lote-tree leaves, and let a woman pour the water while standing, taking charge of nothing else, until she is cleansed with the lote-tree leaves while you are washing. Let the woman most entitled to her among her relatives undertake her washing, otherwise a pious woman. If she is young or weak, let a pious Muslim woman undertake it. When you finish washing her lower half with a clean washing using water and lote-tree leaves, perform her ablution as for prayer. This is the explanation of her ablution. Then wash her after that three times with water and lote-tree leaves, beginning with her head before anything else, and rinse the washing from the lote-tree leaves with water. Do not comb her hair with a comb. If something occurs from her after the three washings, make it five. If something occurs in the fifth, make it seven. All of that should be an odd number, with water and lote-tree leaves. If it is in the fifth or the third, add some camphor and some lote-tree leaves. Then put that in a new jar. Then sit her up and pour it over her, beginning with her head until you reach her feet. When you finish with her, place a clean garment over her. Then insert your hand from behind the garment and remove it from her. Then stuff her lower area with cotton as much as you can, and stuff the cotton with some of her perfume. Then take a long washed strip of cloth and tie it on her buttocks as a belt is tied. Then tie it between her thighs and press her thighs together. Then throw the end of the strip from her buttocks to near her knees. This is the matter of her lower area. Then perfume her and shroud her, and fold her hair into three braids—a forelock and two braids—and do not make her resemble men. Let her shroud be in five garments, one of which is the waist-wrapper with which you wrap her thighs. Do not remove anything from her hair with depilatory paste or anything else. Whatever falls from her hair, wash it, then stick it back into her head hair. Perfume her head hair and perfume it well. Do not wash her with heated water. Cover her and what you shroud her with with seven sprinklings if you wish, and make everything from them in odd numbers. If you prefer to cover her in her bier, make that an odd number as well. This is the matter of her shroud and her head. If she is drooping or constricted or similar, take a single piece of cloth and soak it in water, and make it follow every part of her, but do not move her, for I fear that something may escape from her that cannot be returned."
