حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الْخَالِقِ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنَّ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ حَدَّثَهُمْ قَالَ كُنْتُ أُجَالِسُ بَرِيرَةَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَبْلَ

أَنْ أَلِيَ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فَكَانَتْ تَقُولُ يَا عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ إِنِّي لَأَرَى فِيكَ خِصَالًا لَخَلِيقٌ أَنْ تَلِيَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ فَإِنْ وُلِّيتَهُ فَاحْذَرِ الدِّمَاءَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لِيُدْفَعُ عَنْ بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا عَلَى مِحْجَمَةٍ مِنْ دَمٍ يُرِيقُهُ مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ»

Translation

  4. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān

✧ that I should take charge of this affair. She used to say, "O Abdul-Malik, I see in you qualities that make you worthy to take charge of this community. If you are appointed to it, beware of bloodshed, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'A man will be turned away from the gate of Paradise, even though he is able to look at it, because of a cupping-glassful of blood that he sheds from a Muslim without right.'"
