✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to come to us in Makkah twice every day. Then one day he came to us at noon. I said, "O father, this is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for him. Nothing has brought him at this hour except a matter." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Do you realize that Allah has granted me permission to emigrate?" Abu Bakr said, "Then companionship, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Companionship." Abu Bakr said, "I have two riding camels which I have been feeding for such and such a time in anticipation of this day. Take one of them." He said, "For its price, O Abu Bakr." He said, "For its price, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, if you wish." She said, "We prepared provisions for them, then she tore her waist-wrap and tied it with part of it. They set out and stayed in the cave on Mount Thawr. When they reached it, Abu Bakr entered the cave before him and did not leave any hole in it without inserting his finger into it, fearing that a poisonous creature might be in it. Quraysh went out when they missed the two of them, seeking them, and they placed a reward of one hundred camels for the Prophet ﷺ. They went out wandering in the mountains of Makkah until they reached the mountain where the two of them were. Abu Bakr said to a man he saw facing the cave, "O Messenger of Allah, he can see us." He said, "No, indeed, angels are covering us with their wings." That man sat down and urinated facing the cave. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If he could see us, he would not have done this." They stayed for three nights, while 'Amir b. Fuhayrah, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, pastured Abu Bakr's flock for them, then set out from them in the last part of the night and arrived among the shepherds in their grazing grounds at morning. He would go out with them and walk in a bowed manner, then when it became dark he would return with the flock to the two of them, so that the shepherds thought he was with them. Meanwhile 'Abd Allah b. Abi Bakr would remain in Makkah during the day gathering news, then come to the two of them when it became dark and inform them, then set out from them in the last part of the night and reach Makkah as if he had spent the night there. Then they left the cave and took the coastal route. Abu Bakr would walk in front of him, and when he feared an attack from behind, he would walk behind him. His journey continued like that. Abu Bakr was a well-known man among the people. When someone met him, he would say to Abu Bakr, "Who is this with you?" He would say, "A guide who guides me," meaning guidance in religion, while the other man thought he meant a trail guide. When they reached the houses of Qudayd, which was on their coastal route, a man came to the gathering of Banu Mudlij and said, "I have seen two riders heading toward the coast, and I think one of them is the man of Quraysh whom they are seeking." Suraqah b. Malik said, "Those two riders are from those we sent out in search of him. Comfort the people." Then he called his slave girl and whispered to her, ordering her to bring out his horse and to lower his spear but not to stand it up until he came to his resting place at such and such a spot. Then he came to her, mounted his horse, and went out in pursuit of them. Suraqah said, "I drew near to them until I could hear the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then I spurred the horse and it stumbled on its nose. I took out divining arrows from my quiver and cast them: should I harm him or not? 'Do not harm him' came out. My soul refused until I followed him and caught up with him at a similar spot. The horse stumbled again and I took out his hand once more and cast the arrows: should I harm him or not? 'Do not harm him' came out. My soul refused until, when I was at a similar spot, I feared that something like what had befallen me would befall me again. So I called out to him and said, 'I see that you will have a great affair. Stop so that I may speak with you.' The Prophet ﷺ stopped. He asked him to write for him a guarantee of safety. He ordered him to write for him, and he wrote for him." Suraqah said, "On the day of Hunayn, I came with the document and took it out and called out, 'I am Suraqah.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'A day of faithfulness.'" Suraqah said, "I never likened his leg in its stirrups except to the heart of a palm tree. I mentioned something to ask him, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am a man with livestock. The watering troughs are filled with water, and the animals drink, and some water remains in the troughs, and then stray camels come to it. Is there any reward for me in that?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Yes, in every living being with a warm liver there is reward.'"
