'Abd al-Malik one night as he was reciting Surat al-Nur while reclining. When he reached {Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you} until he reached {And the one who took upon himself the greater part of it will have a great punishment}, he sat up and said, 'O Abu Bakr, who took upon himself the greater part of it? Was it not 'Ali b. Abi Talib?' I said to myself, 'What should I say? If I say no, I fear I will encounter evil from him, and if I say yes, I will have brought a grave matter against a man from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, something he did not say.' Then I said to myself, 'Allah has accustomed me to truthfulness for good.' 'No, O Commander of the Faithful.' He struck the bed with his staff two or three times, then said, 'Then who?' He repeated that several times. I said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul.' 'Urwa b. al-Zubayr, Sa'id b. al-Musayyab, 'Alqama b. Waqqas, and 'Ubayd Allah b. 'Abd Allah b. 'Utba narrated to me, and some of the people had better wording than others, but each of them memorized his hadith, that 'A'isha said: 'Ali made a suggestion concerning my affair, may Allah forgive him. Then she said: When the Messenger of Allah intended a journey, he would cast lots among his wives. He went on the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq and drew lots among his wives, and my lot came out, so I went out with the Messenger of Allah after the hijab had been revealed. I was carried in my howdah and taken down from it. We traveled until when the Messenger of Allah finished that expedition and returned, and we drew near to Madinah, he announced departure one night. I got up when he announced departure and walked until I passed beyond the army. When I had finished my business and came back to my mount, I noticed that a necklace of mine made of onyx of Zafar had broken, so I went back searching for my necklace, and that search detained me. The group that was loading the mounts came and lifted my howdah onto my camel that I used to ride, thinking that I was in it. Women at that time were light, not weighed down by flesh, for one of us would eat only a morsel of food, so the people did not find the lightness of the howdah strange when they lifted it. I was a young girl of recent age. They sent the camel off and departed. I found my necklace after the army had gone on. I came to their camp, and there was no one to call or answer. I made for my place where I had been, thinking that they would miss me and come back to me. While I was sitting in my place, sleep overcame me and I slept. Safwan b. al-Mu'attal al-Sulami, then al-Dhakwani, was behind the army. He traveled through the night and reached my place in the morning. He saw the black shape of a sleeping person and recognized me when he saw me, for he used to see me before the hijab. I woke up at his istirja' when he recognized me, and I covered my face with my jilbab. By Allah, he did not speak a word to me, nor did I hear from him anything except his istirja' when he made his mount kneel and stepped on its foreleg, so I mounted it, and he set off leading the mount with me until he brought me to the army after they had stopped in the intense midday heat. Then those who perished among the people of the slander perished. The one who took upon himself the greater part of the sin was 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul. We arrived in Madinah, and I fell ill for a month after our arrival. The people were spreading the words of the slanderers while I was unaware of any of that, and what made me suspicious in my illness was that I did not recognize from the Messenger of Allah the gentleness that I used to see from him when I was ill. He would only enter upon me and say, "How is this one of you?" then leave. That made me suspicious, but I did not know of the evil until I went out after I had recovered, I and Umm Mistah, toward my house when we had finished our business. Umm Mistah stumbled and said, 'May Mistah perish.' I said, 'What a bad thing you have said. Do you revile a man who witnessed Badr?' She said, 'O you, have you not heard what he said?' I said, 'And what did he say?' She told me about the slander of the people of the lie, and I became more ill on top of my illness. When I returned to my house, the Messenger of Allah entered upon me and said, "How is this one of you?" I said, 'Will you permit me to go to my parents?' He said, "Yes." At that time I wanted to ascertain the news from them, so he permitted me, and I went to my mother and father. I said, 'O mother, what are the people talking about?' She said, 'O my daughter, take it lightly. By Allah, seldom is a beautiful woman loved by a man who has co-wives but that they speak much against her.' I said, 'Glory be to Allah! Have the people really spoken of this?' She said, 'Yes.' I cried that night until morning, my tears did not stop, and I did not taste sleep. Then I continued crying in the morning. The Messenger of Allah called 'Ali b. Abi Talib and Usama b. Zayd when the revelation was delayed, to consult them about separating from his wife. As for Usama, he indicated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he knew of the innocence of his wife and what he knew in his heart of affection for them, and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, she is your family, and we know nothing but good.' As for 'Ali b. Abi Talib, he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Allah has not put you in difficulty, and there are many women besides her. If you ask the servant girl, she will tell you the truth.' So the Messenger of Allah called Barira and said, "O Barira, have you seen anything suspicious?" Barira said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have never seen anything against her that I could fault, except that she is a young girl who falls asleep over her family's dough, and the domestic animal comes and eats it.' On that day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood on the pulpit and sought someone to excuse him from 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul, saying, "O people of Islam, who will excuse me from a man whose harm has reached me in my family? By Allah, I know nothing about my family but good, and they have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he used not to enter upon my family except with me." Sa'd b. Mu'adh stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, I will strike his neck, and if he is from our brothers of the Khazraj, you command us and we will do as you command.' Sa'd b. 'Ubada stood up, and he was the chief of the Khazraj that day, and before that he had been a righteous man, but zeal took hold of him, and he said to Sa'd b. Mu'adh, 'You lie, by the life of Allah, you will not kill him, and you are not able to kill him.' Usayd b. Hudayr, who was the cousin of Sa'd b. Mu'adh, stood up and said to Sa'd b. 'Ubada, 'You lie, by the life of Allah, he will certainly kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites.' She said: The two tribes, Aws and Khazraj, were stirred up until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of Allah was standing on the pulpit. He kept calming them until they fell silent, and he fell silent. She said: I wept that day, my tears did not stop, and I did not taste sleep, and my parents were with me. I had wept for two nights and a day, thinking that weeping would split my liver. While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, a woman of the Ansar asked permission to enter, and I gave her permission, and she sat weeping with me. While we were in that state, the Messenger of Allah entered upon us and sat down. She said: He had not sat with me since what was said to me had been said, and a month had passed without revelation concerning my affair. She said: When he sat, the Messenger of Allah pronounced the tashahhud, then said, "To proceed, O 'A'isha, it has reached me about you such and such. If you are innocent, Allah will declare your innocence, but if you have committed a sin, then ask Allah for forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant admits his sin and then repents to Allah, Allah turns to him in forgiveness." She said: When the Messenger of Allah finished his words, my tears dried up until I felt not a drop of them. I said to my father, 'Answer the Messenger of Allah about what he said.' He said, 'By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah.' I said to my mother, 'Answer the Messenger of Allah.' She said, 'By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah.' I said, though I was a young girl who did not recite much of the Qur'an, 'By Allah, you have heard this talk until it has settled in your hearts and you have believed it. If I tell you that I am innocent, and Allah knows that I am innocent, you will not believe me about that. But if I admit a sin, while Allah knows that I am innocent, you will certainly believe me. By Allah, I find no example for myself and for you except the father of Yusuf, when he said, {So patience is most fitting, and Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe}.' Then I turned and lay down on my bed, knowing then that I was innocent and that Allah would declare my innocence. But by Allah, I did not think that Allah would send down revelation concerning my affair that would be recited, for my affair in my own estimation was too insignificant for Allah to speak about me in a matter to be recited. Rather, I hoped that Allah would show His Messenger a vision in sleep by which He would declare my innocence. She said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah did not leave his seat, nor did anyone of the household leave, until Allah sent down revelation upon him, and he was seized by what used to seize him of the intense experience, until drops of sweat like pearls flowed from him on a cold day because of the weight of the Qur'an that was being revealed to him. When the Messenger of Allah was relieved, he was relieved while smiling. The first word he spoke was, "O 'A'isha, as for Allah, He has declared your innocence." My mother said to me, 'Get up and go to him.' I said, 'No, by Allah, I will not get up and go to him, and I praise none but Allah.' And Allah sent down {Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you}, the ten verses in full. When Allah sent down this concerning my innocence, Abu Bakr, who used to spend on Mistah because of their kinship and his poverty, said, 'By Allah, I will never spend anything on Mistah again, because of what he said about 'A'isha.' So Allah sent down {And let not those of virtue and wealth among you swear not to give...} the verse. Abu Bakr said, 'By Allah, I love that Allah should forgive me,' and he resumed the spending on Mistah that he used to give, and said, 'By Allah, I will never withdraw it from him.' 'A'isha said: The Messenger of Allah asked Zaynab bt. Jahsh about my affair, saying, "O Zaynab, what do you know or have you seen?" Zaynab said, 'I protect my hearing and my sight. By Allah, I know nothing but good.' She was the one who rivaled me among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, but Allah protected her through piety. Her sister Hamna began to fight on her behalf and perished among those who perished from the people of the slander. Al-Zuhri said: This is what has reached us from the hadith of these people.
