✧ Where the people of the slander said about her what they said, and God declared her innocent of all of it. A group narrated to me parts of her account, and some of them were more retentive of her account than others and more precise in its presentation. I have retained from each one of them the hadith that he narrated to me from Aisha. Aisha said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ intended a journey, he would cast lots among his wives, and whichever of them the lot fell upon, he took her with him. He cast lots among us for a military expedition he undertook, and my lot came out, so I went out with him after the veil had been prescribed. I was carried in my howdah and set down in it. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished that expedition of his and returned, and we drew near Madinah, he announced one night the departure. I got up when they announced departure and walked until I passed beyond the army. When I had finished my business, I came back to the camp and felt for my chest, and found that a necklace of mine made of Yemeni onyx beads had broken. I went back searching for my necklace, and the search for it detained me. Then the people who were saddling my camel came and lifted my howdah and loaded it onto my camel that I used to ride, thinking that I was in it. Women in those days were light, not heavy, and flesh had not weighed them down; they ate only a morsel of food. So the people did not find the howdah heavy when they lifted it, and they loaded it. I was a girl of tender age. They set the camel going and departed. I found my necklace after the army had gone on. I came to their campsite and there was no one in it. I went to the place where I had been staying, thinking that they would miss me and come back to me. While I was sitting in my place, sleep overcame me and I slept. Safwan b. al-Mu'attal al-Sulami, then al-Dhakwani, had halted in the rear of the army and then set off in the night. He reached my place in the morning and saw the dark shape of a sleeping person. He came to me, and he had seen me before the veil. I woke up at his saying 'Indeed we belong to God and to Him we shall return.' By God, he did not speak a word to me, nor did I hear from him any word other than his utterance of 'Indeed we belong to God and to Him we shall return,' until he made his mount kneel and stepped on its foreleg, and I mounted it. He set off leading the mount with me until we reached the army after they had halted to rest in the midday heat. Then those who perished perished. The one who took upon himself the greater part of the slander was Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul. We arrived in Madinah, and I fell ill there for a month. The people were spreading the talk of the slanderers while I was unaware of any of that. What troubled me during my illness was that I did not recognize from the Messenger of God the gentleness I used to see from him when I was sick. He would only enter, greet, and then say, 'How is that one of yours?' That troubled me, and I was unaware of anything until I recovered. I went out with Umm Mistah toward the open area for relieving ourselves. We did not go out except from night to night, and that was before privies were built near our houses. Our practice was the practice of the early Arabs in going out to relieve themselves. I and Umm Mistah bt. Abi Ruhm were returning after we had finished our business, walking, when Umm Mistah stumbled over her long garment and said, 'May Mistah perish!' I said to her, 'How bad is what you said! Do you revile a man who was present at Badr?' She said, 'O you there, have you not heard what he said?' I said, 'And what did he say?' She informed me of what the slanderers said, and I became more ill on top of my illness. When I returned to my house, the Messenger of God entered and said, 'How is that one of yours?' I said, 'Permit me to go to my parents.' She said: At that time I wanted to ascertain the news from them. The Messenger of God permitted me, so I went to my parents and said to my mother, 'What are the people talking about?' She said, 'My little daughter, take the matter lightly. By God, there is rarely a woman who is beautiful and loved by a husband who has co-wives but that they speak much against her.' I said, 'Glory be to God! Have the people really been talking about this?' She said: I spent that night until morning, with my tears not ceasing and no sleep touching my eyes. In the morning, the Messenger of God ﷺ called Ali b. Abi Talib and Usama b. Zayd, when the revelation was slow in coming, to consult them about separating from his wife. She said: As for Usama, he advised him according to what he knew of the innocence of his wife and what he knew in himself of affection for them. Usama said, 'O Messenger of God, she is your wife, and we know nothing but good.' As for Ali, he said, 'O Messenger of God, God has not made things narrow for you; women other than her are many. Ask the servant girl, and she will tell you the truth.' The Messenger of God called Barira and said to her, 'Have you seen anything from Aisha that troubles you?' Barira said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have not seen anything from her that I could fault her for, except that she is a young girl who sleeps over the dough until the domestic animal comes and eats it.' She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up that same day and sought to be excused from Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul. The Messenger of God said, 'Who will excuse me from a man whose harm to my family has reached me?' He said it three times. 'By God, I know nothing but good about my family, and they have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he never enters upon my family except with me.' Sa'd b. Mu'adh stood up and said, 'I, by God, O Messenger of God, will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, we will strike his neck, and if he is from our brothers of the Khazraj, you will command us and we will do to him as you command.' Sa'd b. Ubada stood up, and he was the chief of the Khazraj. He had been a righteous man before that, but zeal overcame him. He said, 'You have lied, by God's life, you will not kill him, and you cannot kill him.' Usayd b. Hudayr b. Simak stood up and said to Sa'd b. Ubada, 'You have lied, by God's life, he will surely kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of hypocrites.' The two tribes, Aws and Khazraj, rose up in excitement while the Messenger of God was standing on the pulpit, calming them until they fell silent, and he fell silent. I wept that day and night, my tears not ceasing and no sleep touching my eyes, until I thought that weeping would split my liver. While I was weeping, a woman of the Ansar asked permission to enter, and I permitted her. She sat weeping with me. While we were like that, the Messenger of God entered and sat down, and he had not sat with me since what was said about me had been said. A month had passed and nothing had been revealed to him concerning my affair. The Messenger of God recited the testimony of faith, then said, 'To proceed, O Aisha, I have received such and such about you. If you are innocent, God will declare you innocent, and if you have committed a sin, then ask God for forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant acknowledges a sin and then repents, God turns to him in forgiveness.' When the Messenger of God finished his speech, my tears stopped until I felt not a drop of them. I said to my father, 'Answer the Messenger of God regarding what he said.' He said, 'By God, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of God.' I said the same to my mother, and she said the same. I said, while I was a young girl who did not recite much of the Quran, 'By God, I know that you have heard what has been talked about, and it has settled in your hearts, and you have believed it. If I say that I am innocent, and God knows that I am innocent, you will not believe me in that. And if I confess to you a matter, and God knows that I am innocent of it, you will surely believe me. By God, I find no likeness for me and for you except what Abu Yusuf said: {So patience is most fitting.} And I was a young girl who did not recite much of the Quran.' Then I turned on my bed, hoping that God would declare me innocent of what I was innocent of. But by God, I did not think that revelation would be sent down concerning my affair, recitation that would be recited. For I considered myself too insignificant for Quran to be revealed about me. But I hoped that God would show His Messenger a dream in which He would declare me innocent. She said: By God, the Messenger of God had not left his seat, nor had anyone of the household gone out, when revelation came down upon him. He was seized by the intense distress that used to seize him at the time of revelation, until drops like pearls on a cold day were dripping from him. Then it was lifted from him while he was smiling. The first thing he said was, 'O Aisha, praise God, for God has declared you innocent.' My mother said to me, 'Get up and go to the Messenger of God ﷺ.' I said, 'No, by God, I will not get up to him, and I will not praise anyone but God, may He be glorified and exalted.' And God sent down {Indeed, those who came with the slander} and the rest of the verses. When God sent down this concerning my innocence, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, who had been spending on Mistah b. Uthatha because of his kinship with him, said, 'By God, I will never spend anything on Mistah after what he said about Aisha.' Then God sent down this verse: {And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give...} to the end of the verse. Abu Bakr said, 'Yes, I would love for God to forgive me,' and he returned to giving Mistah what he used to spend on him. She said: The Messenger of God had asked Zaynab bt. Jahsh about my affair, saying, 'O Zaynab, what do you know and what have you seen?' She said, 'I protect my hearing and my sight. By God, I know nothing but good about her.' Aisha said: She was the one among the Prophet's wives ﷺ who used to rival me. God protected her through piety. Her sister Hamna used to fight on her behalf, and she perished among those who perished.
