قَالَتْ فَبَكَيْتُ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ حَتَّى أَصْبَحْتُ لَا يَرْقَأُ لِي دَمْعٌ وَلَا أَكْتَحِلُ بِنَوْمٍ قَالَتْ ثُمَّ أَصْبَحْتُ أَبْكِي وَدَعَا رَسُولُ ✧ When the people of the slander said about her what they said, and God declared her innocent. Each of them narrated to me a portion of the hadith that was narrated to me from Aisha, and some of their hadith confirms others, even though some of them were more retentive of her hadith than others. They mentioned that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ wanted to set out on a journey, he would cast lots among his wives, and whichever of them the lot fell upon, he would take her with him. Aisha said: He cast lots among us during a military expedition he undertook, and my lot came out, so I went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ after the veil had been revealed. I was carried in my howdah and brought down while in it. We traveled until, when the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished that expedition of his and returned, and we drew near to Madinah, he announced one night that we would depart. I got up when he announced the departure and walked until I passed beyond the army. When I had finished my business and came back to my mount, I found that a necklace of mine made of A'far beads had broken, so I went back to look for my necklace, and my search for it detained me. The group that used to make me ready came and lifted my howdah onto my camel, the one I used to ride, thinking that I was in it. At that time we were light, as meat had not made us heavy; one of us would eat only a morsel of food, so the people did not notice the lightness of the howdah when they lifted it. I was a young girl, so they set the camel moving and went on. I found my necklace after the army had moved on, and came to their camp, but there was no one there to call out or answer. I went to the place where I had been staying, thinking that they would miss me and come back to me. While I was sitting in my place, sleep overcame me and I fell asleep. Safwan b. al-Mu'attal al-Sulami had been behind the army, and he traveled on and arrived at my place in the morning. He saw the form of a sleeping person and recognized me when he saw me, for he had seen me before the veil. I woke up when he uttered "inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" upon recognizing me, and I covered my face with my outer garment. By God, he did not speak a word to me, and I did not hear a word from him until he made his camel kneel, pressed down on its foreleg, and I mounted it. He set off leading the camel with me until he caught up with the army after they had halted in the extreme heat of midday. Then those who perished from the people of the slander perished, and the one who took upon himself the greatest share of the sin was Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul. We arrived in Madinah, and I fell ill for a month after we arrived, while the people were indulging in the talk of the slanderers, and I was unaware of any of that. What disturbed me during my illness was that I did not perceive from the Messenger of God ﷺ the kindness that I used to see from him when I was sick; he would only enter upon me and say, "How is that one of you?" then leave. That disturbed me, but I was unaware of the evil until I went out after I had recovered, along with Umm Mistah, to the place for relieving ourselves, which was our open-air toilet. We would only go out at night to night, and that was before we had small closets near our houses. Our practice was the practice of the early Arabs in going out to the desert for defecation, and we were annoyed by having closets near our houses. So I went out with Umm Mistah toward my house after we had finished our business. Umm Mistah stumbled in her long garment and said, "May Mistah perish!" I said, "What a bad thing you have said! Do you revile a man who was present at Badr?" She said, "O you, have you not heard what he said?" I said, "What did he say?" She informed me of the talk of the slanderers, and I became more ill on top of my illness. When I returned to my house, the Messenger of God ﷺ came in and said, "How is that one of you?" I said, "Will you permit me to go to my parents?" At that time I wanted to make sure of the news from them. He permitted me, and I went to my mother and father and said, "O mother, what are the people talking about?" She said, "O daughter, take it lightly, for by God, rarely is a beautiful woman loved by a man who has other wives but that they speak much against her." I said, "Glory be to God! Have the people really been talking about that?" She said, "Yes." I wept that night until morning, my tears not ceasing and I could not sleep. Then I spent the next day weeping. The Messenger of God ﷺ called Ali b. Abi Talib and Usama b. Zayd when the revelation was delayed, to seek their counsel about separating from his wife. As for Usama, he advised the Messenger of God ﷺ according to what he knew of his wife's innocence and the affection he had in his heart for them, and said, "O Messenger of God, she is your wife, and we know nothing but good about her." As for Ali b. Abi Talib, he said, "O Messenger of God, God has not made things narrow for you; there are many women besides her. If you ask the slave girl, she will tell you the truth." The Messenger of God ﷺ called Barīra and said to her, "O Barīra, have you seen anything that causes you doubt?" Barīra said, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have never seen any fault in her that I could find, except that she is a young girl who sleeps and lets her family's dough be eaten by the domestic animals." The Messenger of God ﷺ stood that day and asked to be excused from Abdullah b. Ubayy. He said while on the pulpit: "O assembly of Muslims, who will excuse me from a man whose harm to my family has reached me? By God, I know nothing but good about my family. They have mentioned a man of whom I know nothing but good, and he never used to enter upon my family except with me." Sa'd b. Mu'adh stood up and said, "O Messenger of God, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, I will strike his neck, and if he is from our brothers of the Khazraj, you command us and we will do your command." Sa'd b. Ubada, who was the leader of the Khazraj, stood up, and he had been before that a righteous man, but zeal took hold of him, and he said to Sa'd b. Mu'adh, "You have lied! By the life of God, you shall not kill him, and you are not able to kill him." Usayd b. Hudayr, who was the cousin of Sa'd b. Mu'adh, stood up and said to Sa'd b. Ubada, "You have lied! By the life of God, we will kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites." The two tribes, the Aws and the Khazraj, became agitated until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was standing on the pulpit. He kept calming them down until they fell silent, and he fell silent. She said: I remained that day with my tears not ceasing and I could not sleep, while my parents were with me. I had spent two nights and a day without sleeping or my tears ceasing, thinking that weeping would split my liver. While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, a woman of the Ansar asked permission to enter upon me. I granted her permission, and she began to weep with me. While we were thus, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon us and sat down. She said: He had not sat with me since the talk had begun, and he had waited a month without receiving revelation concerning my affair. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ pronounced the testimony of faith when he sat down, then said: "Now then, O Aisha, it has reached me about you such and such. If you are innocent, God will soon declare your innocence. If you have committed a sin, ask God for forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant acknowledges a sin and then repents to God, God accepts his repentance." When he finished his speech, my tears dried up so that I did not feel a single drop. I said to my father, "Answer the Messenger of God about what he said." He said, "By God, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of God." I said to my mother, "Answer the Messenger of God." She said, "By God, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of God." I said, while I was a young girl who did not read much of the Quran, "You, by God, have heard this talk until it has settled in your hearts and you have believed it. If I say to you that I am innocent, and God knows that I am innocent, you will not believe me. But if I confess to something, and God knows that I am innocent, you will surely believe me. By God, I find for myself and for you no example except the father of Joseph, who said: 'So patience is most fitting. And God is the one sought for help against what you describe' (Quran 12:18)." Then I turned away and lay down on my bed. She said: At that time I knew that I was innocent and that God would declare my innocence, but by God, I did not think that God would send down concerning my affair a revelation that would be recited, for my affair was too insignificant in my own eyes for God to speak about me in a matter that would be recited. But I hoped that God would show His Messenger a dream in which He would declare my innocence. By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ had not left his seat, and no one of the household had gone out, when God sent down revelation upon him. He was seized by the intense state that used to seize him, until sweat dripped from him like pearls on a cold day, because of the weight of the Quran that was being revealed to him. When the state left the Messenger of God, he recovered and was smiling. The first words he spoke were: "O Aisha, God has declared your innocence." My mother said to me, "Get up and go to him." I said, "By God, I will not get up and go to him, and I will praise no one but God." Then God sent down: "Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you..." the ten verses in full. When God sent down this concerning my innocence, Abu Bakr, who used to spend on Mistah because of his kinship and poverty, said, "By God, I will never spend anything on him again because of what he said about Aisha." Then God sent down: "And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give..." the verse. Abu Bakr said, "Yes, by God, I love that God should forgive me." So he returned to spending on Mistah as he used to, and said, "By God, I will never withhold it from him." Aisha said: The Messenger of God ﷺ had asked Zaynab bt. Jahsh about my affair, saying, "O Zaynab, what do you know or what have you seen?" Zaynab said, "I protect my hearing and my sight. By God, I know nothing but good." She was the one who used to rival me among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, but God protected her through her piety. Her sister Hamna began to fight on her behalf and perished among those who perished from the people of the slander. Ibn Shihab said: This is what has reached us of the hadith of these people.
