حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ مِقْلَاصٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ مَوْلَى آلِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ إِيَاسِ بْنِ أَبِي فَاطِمَةَ الضَّمْرِيِّ فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ
كُنْتُ جَالِسًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «مَنْ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُصْبِحَ فَلَا يَسْقَمُ؟» فَابْتَدَأَنْاهُ فَقُلْنَا نَحْنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَعَرَفْنَاهَا فِي وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ «أَتُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا كَالْحَمِيرِ الصِّيالَةِ؟» قَالُوا لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا أَصْحَابَ بَلَاءٍ وَأَصْحَابَ كَفَّارَاتٍ؟ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ بِيَدِهِ إِنَّ اللهَ لَيَبْتَلِيَ الْمُؤْمِنَ بِالْبَلَاءِ وَمَا يَبْتَلِيهِ بِهِ إِلَّا لِكَرَامَتِهِ عَلَيْهِ إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ أَنْزَلَهُ مَنْزِلَةً لَمْ يَبْلُغْهَا بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ فَيَبْتَلِيهِ مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ مَا يُبَلِّغُهُ تِلْكَ الدَّرَجَةَ»

✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ when he turned to us and said: "Who would love to wake up and never fall ill?" We started answering him and said: "We would, O Messenger of God." He said: then we recognized it in his face, and he said: "Would you love to be like braying donkeys?" They said: "No, O Messenger of God." He said: "Would you not love to be people of trial and people of expiation? For by the One in whose hand is the soul of Abu al-Qasim, God tests the believer with trial, and He does not test him with it except for His honor toward him. God has granted him a station that he did not reach by any of his deeds, so He tests him with trials that will make him attain that degree."
