حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ السَّدُوسِيُّ قَالَ ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ هَانِئِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ

أَنَّهُ وَفَدَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَاسٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ فَسَمِعَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُكَنَّى أَبَا الْحَكَمٍ فَقَالَ «لِمَ يُكَنِّيكَ هَؤُلَاءِ أَبَا الْحَكَمِ؟» قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَحْكُمُ بَيْنَ قَوْمِي فِي الشَّيْءِ يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُمْ فَيَرْضَى هَؤُلَاءِ وهَؤُلَاءِ فَكُنِّيتُ أَبَا الْحَكَمِ وَلَيْسَ لِي وَلَدٌ فَأَنَا أَبُو الْحَكَمِ قَالَ «هَلْ لَكَ وَلَدٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «مَا اسْمُ أَكْبَرِهِمْ؟» قَالَ شُرَيْحٌ قَالَ «فَأَنْتَ أَبُو شُرَيْحٍ»

✧ That he came as a delegate to the Messenger of God ﷺ among a group of his people, and the Messenger of God ﷺ heard him being called Abu al-Hakam. He said: 'Why do these people call you Abu al-Hakam?' He said: 'O Messenger of God, I used to judge between my people in the matter that occurred between them, and these and those would be pleased, so I was called Abu al-Hakam, but I have no child, so I am Abu al-Hakam.' He said: 'Do you have children?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'What is the name of the oldest of them?' He said: 'Shurayh.' He said: 'Then you are Abu Shurayh.'
