✧ He tied his garments on and took with him a shield, then set off until they came to him. He said to the people, "Throw me a burnus," and he sat on it. The 'ilj said, "You Arabs, I know what brought you to come to us. You are a people who do not find in your lands enough food to fill you, so take, we will give you of food what you need. We are a people of Magians, and we hate to kill you; you are encroaching on our land." Al-Mughirah said, "By God, that is not what brought us. But we were a people who worshipped stones and idols. Whenever we saw a stone better than another, we threw it away and took the other, and we did not know a Lord until God sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves. He called us to Islam, and we followed him. He commanded us to fight our enemy, those who abandoned Islam. We did not come for food, but we came to kill your fighters and take your offspring captive. As for what you mentioned of food, by my life, we did not find enough food to fill us, and sometimes we did not find enough water to quench our thirst. So we came to this land of yours and found in it abundant food. No, by God, we will not leave it until it is ours or yours." The 'ilj said in Persian, "He spoke truth, and your eye will be gouged out tomorrow at al-Qadisiyyah." His eye was gouged out the next day; an arrow hit him.
