حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ يَعِيشَ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ قَالَ
فَاتَنِيَ الْعِشَاءُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَقَلَّبُ لَا يَأْتِينِي النَّوْمُ فَقُلْتُ لَوْ خَرَجْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَلَّيْتُ مَا قُدِّرَ لِي فَفَعَلْتُ ثُمَّ اسْتَنَدْتُ إِلَى نَاحِيَةٍ مِنْهُ فَدَخَلَ عُمَرُ فَلَمَّا رَآنِي أَنْكَرَنِي وَقَالَ مَنْ هَذَا؟ فَقُلْتُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ مَا أَخْرَجَكَ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ؟ قُلْتُ الْجُوعُ قَالَ وَأَنَا مَا أَخْرَجَنِي إِلَّا الَّذِي أَخْرَجَكَ فَلَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَنْ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا رَأَى سَوَادَنَا أَنْكَرَهُ فَقَالَ «مَنْ هَذَانِ؟» فَبَدَرَنِي عُمَرُ فَقَالَ هَذَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَهَذَا عُمَرُ فَقَالَ «مَا أَخْرَجَكُمَا هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ؟» فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ الْخَبَرَ قَالَ «وَأَنَا مَا أَخْرَجَنِي إِلَّا الَّذِي أَخْرَجَكُمَا انْطَلِقُوا بِنَا إِلَى مَنْزِلِ الْوَاقِمِيِّ» فَأَتَيْنَا الْبَابَ فَاسْتَأْذَنَّا فَخَرَجَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ فُلَانٌ؟» قَالَتْ ذَهَبَ يَسْتَعْذِبُ لَنَا مِنْ حَشِّ بَنِي حَارِثَةَ فَفَتَحْتِ الْبَابَ فَدَخَلْنَا فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ أَنْ جَاءَ حَامِلًا قِرْبَةً عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ حَتَّى عَلَّقَهَا فِي كَرْنَفَةٍ مِنْ كَرَانِفِ النَّخْلِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ مَرْحَبًا وَأَهْلًا مَا زَارَ النَّاسَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ زَوْرٍ زَارُونِي اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِعِذْقِ بُسْرٍ فَجَعَلْنَا نَنْتَقِي فِي الْقَمَرِ وَنَأْكُلُ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الشَّفْرَةَ وَجَالَ فِي الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِيَّاكَ وَالْحَلُوبَ» أَوْ قَالَ «ذَاتَ الدَّرِّ» فَذَبَحَ لَنَا شَاةً وَسَلَخَهَا وَقَطَّعَهَا فِي الْقِدْرِ وَأَمَرَ الْمَرْأَةَ فَعَجَنَتْ وَخَبَزَتْ ثُمَّ جَاءَنَا بِثَرِيدَةٍ وَلَحْمٍ فَأَكَلْنَا ثُمَّ قَامَ إِلَى الْقِرْبَةِ وَقَدْ تَخَفَّقْهَا الرِّيحُ فَبَرَدَتْ فَأَسْقَانَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ خَرَجْنَا لَمْ يُخْرِجْنَا إِلَّا الْجُوعُ ثُمَّ لَمْ نَرْجِعْ حَتَّى أَصَبْنَا هَذَا هَذَا مِنَ النَّعِيمِ الَّذِي تُسْأَلُونَ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ»

✧ "I missed the ʿIshāʾ prayer one night, and I kept tossing and turning without sleep. I said, 'If only I went out to the mosque and prayed what was decreed for me.' So I did, then I leaned against a corner of it. ʿUmar entered and, when he saw me, he did not recognize me and said, 'Who is this?' I said, 'Abū Bakr.' He said, 'What brought you out at this hour?' I said, 'Hunger.' He said, 'And I, nothing brought me out except what brought you out.' Before long, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered. When he saw our dark shapes, he did not recognize us and said, 'Who are these two?' ʿUmar rushed ahead of me and said, 'This is Abū Bakr and this is ʿUmar.' He said, 'What brought you two out at this hour?' We told him the news. He said, 'And I, nothing brought me out except what brought you two out. Come with us to the house of al-Wāqimī.' We came to the door and asked permission. The woman came out, and he said, 'Where is so-and-so?' She said, 'He went to fetch fresh water for us from the orchard of Banū Ḥārithah.' She opened the door, and we entered. Before long he came carrying a water-skin on his back, and he hung it on a palm branch. Then he came to us and said, 'Welcome! What better visitors have visited the people than the visitors who visited me tonight?' Then he brought a cluster of unripe dates, and we began picking them in the moonlight and eating. Then he took the knife and went among the sheep. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, 'Beware of the milking ewe'—or he said, 'the one with milk.' He slaughtered a sheep for us, skinned it, cut it into the pot, and ordered the woman, who kneaded and baked. Then he brought us bread and meat, and we ate. Then he went to the water-skin, which the wind had cooled, and gave us water to drink. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Praise be to God. We went out only because hunger drove us out, and we did not return until we had this. This is among the blessings about which you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection.'"
