حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا خَلَّادُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ثنا فِطْرُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ كَعْبَ بْنَ عُجْرَةَ قَالَ

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا} قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ تَقُولُونَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ الْحَمِيدُ الْمَجِيدُ وَصَلِّ عَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ الْحَمِيدُ الْمَجِيدُ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

Translation

✧ When this verse was revealed: "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace" (Quran 33:56), we said, "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you, but how should we send blessings upon you?" The Prophet replied, "You should say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Send blessings upon us with them and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Grant us peace, O Prophet, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.'"
