✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in intense heat and ordered an expedition to Tabuk. At that time I believed in Allah and His Messenger, but my soul yearned for shade and fresh dates, and I was a strong young man. My soul said to me, “You have two camels; you will find an excuse to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” And my soul said to me, “Stay behind from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” So I was in that state, and the Prophet ﷺ departed in the morning. I went to the market intending to equip myself, but it was as if my hands were held back. The Prophet ﷺ traveled until when he was about two farsakhs from Madinah, he stopped. Then there was a rider catching up with him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Be Abu Khaythamah.” And it was Abu Khaythamah. He said: In Madinah there were eighty-seven hypocrites, along with me, Hilal b. Umayyah, and Murarah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Abu Khaythamah, “What has Ka‘b b. Malik done?” He said, “I left him walking in the alleys of Madinah.” Mu‘adh said, “By Allah, as far as I know he loves Allah and His Messenger.” He said: A group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in our quarter, and some of them said, “By Allah, they have fuller bellies than us, more fearful at the meeting, and weaker hearts.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called ‘Ammar b. Yasir and said, “Go to those people and ask them, ‘What did you mock?’ If you ask them, they will say, ‘We were only engaging in idle talk and playing.’” So he said to them, “You have burned. May Allah burn you.” Then it was revealed: “And if you ask them, they will surely say, ‘We were only engaging in idle talk and playing.’ Say, ‘Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?’” He said: A man who was not one of them but had heard them came and clung to the Prophet’s foot, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I did not incline toward them, but I heard what they said.” The Prophet ﷺ moved on, and the man kept clinging to him and offering excuses and walking with him until blood flowed from his heels. The Prophet ﷺ returned from his expedition, and Hilal b. Umayyah and Murarah b. Rabi‘ah came to him, and he seated us in a corner. It was said to Ka‘b b. Malik, “By Allah, he is not pleased with your two companions, so consider what excuse you will make.” I said, “I will seek help for what I did through lying, but I find nothing better than truthfulness.” So I went to him and said, “Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.” He said, “And upon you. What kept you back, O Ka‘b?” I said, “By Allah, I did not stay behind out of weakness or need, but it was a trial.” He said, “Sit with your two companions.” Then he said to his Companions, “Do not sit with these men, do not speak to them, and do not trade with them.” He sent word to their wives, “Do not let them approach you.” The wife of Hilal b. Umayyah sent word to the Prophet ﷺ that Hilal was an old man, and asked permission to give him something without speaking to him. He granted her permission. The wife of Ka‘b sent word that the wife of Hilal b. Umayyah had asked permission to hand him something, and she asked permission regarding me. I said, “With what will you seek permission? Will you say that I am an old man? By Allah, I am a young man. Will you say that I am ill? By Allah, I am healthy.” So he sent word to her not to do that. Umm Salamah was an excellent intercessor when it was her night. She said, “O Messenger of Allah, will you speak to Hilal b. Umayyah concerning us?” Then one night he said, “Do you know that Allah has accepted the repentance of the three?” She said, “Shall I send to their families and give them the good news?” He said, “Then the people will not leave us to sleep this night, but wait until morning.” The Prophet ﷺ arose, prayed the morning prayer, then turned to his Companions and said, “Do you know that Allah has accepted the repentance of the three?” Two men raced to Ka‘b b. Malik: one rode a horse and took the valley bottom, and one went on foot until he climbed the mountain. He said, “O Ka‘b b. Malik, do you know that Allah has accepted your repentance?” I fell down in prostration, and when he drew near I threw my cloak to him. Then I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Is it from you or from Allah?” He said, “From Allah ﷻ.”
