✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey when Surah al-Hajj was revealed. He raised his voice reciting it while the people were dozing and their mounts had dispersed: “O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the quaking of the Hour is a tremendous thing” up to “but the punishment of Allah is severe.” So they gathered around the Prophet ﷺ, thinking that the Hour had come. He said, “Do you know which day that is?” They said, “Which day is it?” He said, “It is the day on which Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: ‘O Adam, send forth the delegation of the Fire.’ He says, ‘What is the delegation of the Fire?’ He says, ‘From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire and one to Paradise.’” The people were struck silent, until none of them showed even a tooth. He then said, “Work and rejoice, for there was no prophethood except that a period of ignorance preceded it, so the count is completed from the people of that ignorance; and whatever remains is completed from the hypocrites.” And he said, “Work and rejoice, for you are among mankind but like a black mark on a camel’s flank, or like a spot on a beast’s foreleg. And you are alongside two creations that never enter anything without multiplying it: Yaʾjuj and Maʾjuj, along with those of Adam’s children who perished, and Iblis.”
