✧ Al-Qaʿnabi narrated to us; and al-Miqdam b. Dawud narrated to us; Asad b. Musa narrated to us; they said: Sulayman b. al-Mughirah narrated to us from Humayd b. Hilal, who said: Abu al-ʿAliyah came to me and a companion of mine, and said, 'Come, for you two are younger than me and more retentive of hadith than me.' He went with us until he brought us to Bishr b. ʿAsim al-Laythi and said, 'Narrate your hadith to these two.' Bishr said: ʿUqbah b. Malik narrated to us — and he was of his clan — saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a raiding party. They raided a people, and a man from the people fled. A man from the raiding party pursued him with his sword drawn. The fleeing man said, 'I am a Muslim,' but he paid no heed to what he said and struck him and killed him. News of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said harsh words about it, which reached the killer. While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon, the killer said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he only said what he said seeking protection from death.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and from the people in front of him and continued his sermon. Then he said it a second time: 'By Allah, he only said what he said seeking protection from death.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and from the people in front of him and continued his sermon. Then he could not restrain himself and said a third time: 'By Allah, he only said what he said seeking protection from death.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to him, with displeasure visible on his face, and said three times: 'Allah has refused to [forgive] me concerning one who kills a believer.'
