حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنْباعِ رَوْحُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ ثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ مَعْرُوفِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ الْوَائِلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عُشَّانَةَ قَالَ
سَمِعْتُ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَأَنَا فِي غَنَمٍ أَرْعَاهَا فَتَرَكْتُهَا ثُمَّ ذَهَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ تُبَايِعُنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ «مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ؟» فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ «أَيُّمَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَبَيْعَةُ هِجْرَةٍ أَوْ بَيْعَةٌ أَعْرَابِيَّةٌ؟» فَقُلْتُ بَيْعَةُ هِجْرَةٍ فَبَايَعَنِي ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ هَاهُنَا مِنْ مَعَدٍّ فَلْيَقُمْ؟» فَقُمْتُ فَقَالَ «اقْعُدْ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ هَاهُنَا مِنْ مَعَدٍّ فَلْيَقُمْ؟» فَقُمْتُ فَقَالَ «اقْعُدْ» ثُمَّ قَالَهَا الثَّالِثَةَ فَقُمْتُ فَقَالَ «اقْعُدْ» فَقُلْتُ مِمَّنْ نَحْنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «أَنْتُمْ مِنْ قُضَاعَةَ ثُمَّ مَالِكِ بْنِ حِمْيَرٍ»

✧ I heard ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir saying on the pulpit: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah while I was tending sheep. I left them and went to him and said, 'Will you accept my pledge, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'From whom are you?' I told him. He said, 'Which is dearer to you: a pledge of emigration or a Bedouin pledge?' I said, 'A pledge of emigration.' So he accepted my pledge. Then he said, 'Whoever here is from Maʿadd, let him stand.' I stood. He said, 'Sit.' Then he said, 'Whoever here is from Maʿadd, let him stand.' I stood. He said, 'Sit.' Then he said it a third time. I stood. He said, 'Sit.' I said, 'From whom are we, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'You are from Quḍāʿah, then from Mālik b. Ḥimyar.'
