✧ ʿUmayr b. Wahb al-Jumahi sat with Safwan b. Umayyah after the affliction of the people of Badr from Quraysh in the Hijr, a short while later. He was one of those who used to harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, and they suffered hardship from them while they were in Makkah. His son, Wahb b. ʿUmayr, was among the captives of the people of Badr. He said: They mentioned the people of the pit and their misfortunes. Safwan said, 'By Allah, there is no good in life after them.' ʿUmayr b. Wahb said, 'You have spoken the truth. By Allah, were it not for a debt upon me which I cannot repay, and dependents for whom I fear loss after me, I would ride to Muhammad until I kill him. For I have a pretext among them: my son is a captive in their hands.' Safwan seized the opportunity and said, 'Your debt is upon me; I will pay it for you, and your dependents will be with my dependents as their equals as long as they remain. Nothing will suffice them that we cannot provide.' ʿUmayr said, 'Keep my affair and yours secret.' He said, 'I will do so.' Then ʿUmayr ordered his sword to be sharpened and poisoned, then set out for Madinah. While ʿUmar b. al-Khattab was in Madinah among a group of Muslims, remembering the Day of Badr, how Allah had honored them, and what He had shown them of their enemy, he saw ʿUmayr b. Wahb, who had made his camel kneel at the gate of the mosque, wearing his sword across his shoulder. He said, 'This dog, the enemy of Allah, ʿUmayr b. Wahb, has come only for evil. This is the one who stirred up enmity between us and estimated our numbers for the people on the Day of Badr.' Then ʿUmar entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this enemy of Allah, ʿUmayr b. Wahb, has come wearing his sword across his shoulder.' He said, 'Bring him in.' ʿUmar went and took hold of the strap of his sword around his neck and seized him by it. ʿUmar said to some men from the Ansar who were with him, 'Enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sit with him, and beware of this dog, for he is not trustworthy.' Then he brought him in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while ʿUmar held the strap of his sword. He said, 'Release him, O ʿUmar. Come near, O ʿUmayr.' He drew near and said, 'May you have a pleasant morning' — which was the greeting of the people of the Jahiliyyah among them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Allah has honored us with a greeting better than your greeting, O ʿUmayr: the salam, the greeting of the people of Paradise.' ʿUmayr said, 'By Allah, O Muhammad, your acquaintance with it is recent indeed.' He said, 'What has brought you here?' He said, 'I came for this captive who is in your hands; treat him well.' He said, 'Then what is the matter with the sword on your neck?' He said, 'May Allah curse such swords! Have they availed anything?' He said, 'Tell me the truth: what did you come for?' He said, 'I came only for this.' He said, 'Rather, you sat with Safwan b. Umayyah in the Hijr, and you two mentioned the people of the pit from Quraysh. You said, "Were it not for a debt upon me and my dependents, I would go out to kill Muhammad." Safwan undertook to pay your debt and support your dependents on condition that you kill me. And Allah stands between you and that.' ʿUmayr said, 'I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah. O Messenger of Allah, we used to deny you regarding what you brought us of news from heaven and the revelation that descended upon you. This is a matter attended by no one but me and Safwan. By Allah, I know that nothing informed you of it except Allah. Praise be to Allah who guided me to Islam and brought me to this course.' Then he bore witness to the testimony of truth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Instruct your brother in his religion, teach him the Qur'an, and release his captive.' Then he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I was striving to extinguish Allah's light and severely harming those who followed Allah's religion. I would like you to permit me to go to Makkah and call them to Allah and to Islam; perhaps Allah will guide them. Otherwise, I will harm them as I used to harm your companions in their religion.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted him, and he went to Makkah. When ʿUmayr b. Wahb had set out, Safwan said to Quraysh, 'Rejoice at an event that will come to you now and make you forget the event of Badr.' Safwan kept asking travelers about him until a rider arrived and informed him of his acceptance of Islam. He swore never to speak to him again and never to benefit him in any way. When ʿUmayr arrived in Makkah, he stayed there calling to Islam and severely harming those who opposed him, and many people accepted Islam at his hands.
