حَدَّثَنَا طَاهِرُ بْنُ عِيسَى الْمُقْرِئُ الْمِصْرِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا رِشْدِينُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَقِيلُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَمْعَةَ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَ
لَمَّا اشْتَدَّ بِالنَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَجَعُهُ وَأَنَا عِنْدَهُ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ دَعَا بِلَالٌ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ «مُرُوهُ فَلْيَأْمُرِ النَّاسَ يُصَلُّوا» فَخَرَجَ فَأَتَى عُمَرُ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ غَائِبًا فَقَالَ يَا عُمَرُ قُمْ فَصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ فَلَمَّا كَبَّرَ سَمِعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَوْتَهُ وَكَانَ عُمَرُ جُهَيْرَ الصَّوْتِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَيْنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَأْبَى اللهُ ذَلِكَ وَالْمُسْلِمُونَ» فَرَدَّدَ ذَلِكَ مِرَارًا فَبَعَثَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَجَاءَ بَعْدَ أَنْ صَلَّى عُمَرُ تِلْكَ الصَّلَاةَ فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ زَمْعَةَ قَالَ لِي عُمَرُ مَا صَنَعْتَ بِي يَا ابْنَ زَمْعَةَ؟ وَاللهِ مَا ظَنَنْتُ حِينَ أَمَرْتَنِي أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ إِلَّا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَرَكَ بِذَلِكَ وَلَوْلَا ذَلِكَ مَا صَلَّيْتُ بِالنَّاسِ فَقُلْتُ مَا أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَكِنْ حِينَ لَمْ أَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَأَيْتُكَ خَيْرَ مَنْ حَضَرَ

✧ When the Prophet's ﷺ illness became severe, and I was with him among a group of Muslims, Bilal called to prayer. He said: "Tell him to instruct the people to pray." He went out and came to Umar, while Abu Bakr was absent, and said: "O Umar, stand up and lead the people in prayer." He stood up, and when he said the takbir, the Messenger of God ﷺ heard his voice, for Umar was loud-voiced. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Where is Abu Bakr? God and the Muslims refuse that." He repeated that several times. He sent for Abu Bakr, and he came after Umar had prayed that prayer, then Abu Bakr led the people in prayer. Abdullah b. Zam'a said: Umar said to me: "What have you done to me, O Ibn Zam'a? By God, when you commanded me to lead the people in prayer, I only thought that the Messenger of God ﷺ had ordered you to do that. Had it not been for that, I would not have led the people in prayer." I said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ did not command me, but when I did not see Abu Bakr, I considered you the best of those present."
