حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ لَمَّا أَتَاهُمُ ابْنُ رَوَاحَةَ جَمَعُوا لَهُ حُلِيًّا مِنْ حُلِيِّ نِسَائِهِمْ فَأَهْدَوْهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ
يَا مَعْشَرَ الْيَهُودِ إِنَّكُمْ لَأَبْغَضُ خَلْقِ اللهِ إِلَيَّ وَمَا ذَلِكَ بِحَامِلِي أَنْ أَحِيفَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَمَّا مَا عَرَضْتُمْ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ هَذِهِ الرِّشْوَةِ فَإِنَّهَا سُحْتٌ وَإِنَّا لَا نَأْكُلُهَا ثُمَّ خَرَصَ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ خَيَّرَهُمْ أَنْ يَأْخُذُوهَا أَوْ يَأْخُذَهَا هُوَ قَالُوا بِهَذَا قَامَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ فَأَخَذُوهَا بِذَلِكَ الْخَرْصِ

✧ "O company of Jews, you are the most hateful of Allah's creation to me, but that will not cause me to wrong you. As for what you have offered us of this bribe, it is unlawful (suht), and we do not consume it." Then he assessed the crop for them, then gave them the choice to take it or for him to take it. They said, "By this the heavens and the earth are upheld," and they took it according to that assessment.
