✧ I met Bilal, the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and said: O Bilal, tell me how was the expenditure of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: He had nothing. I was the one who took charge of that for him from the time Allah, may He be exalted, sent him until he passed away. When a Muslim man came to him and he saw him unclothed, he would order me concerning him, and I would go and borrow and buy a cloak, clothe him and feed him. This continued until a man from the polytheists came in my way and said: O Bilal, I have ample means, so do not borrow from anyone except me. So I did that. Then one day I performed ablution and then stood to call the adhan for prayer, and there was the polytheist approaching with a group of merchants. When he saw me, he said: O Abyssinian! I said: At your service. He scowled at me and said harsh words to me. He said: Do you know how much time is between you and the month? I said: It is near. He said: It is only four days, and I will seize you for what you owe me, for I did not give you what I gave you out of respect for you or for your companion; rather, I gave it to you to make you my slave, and I will return you to herding sheep as you were before. Then something took hold of my soul as it takes hold of people's souls. I departed, then called the adhan for prayer, until when I had prayed the evening prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his family. I asked permission to enter upon him, and he gave me permission. I said: O Messenger of Allah, the polytheist from whom I used to borrow said such-and-such to me. You do not have anything to pay on my behalf, and I do not have anything, and he will disgrace me. So permit me to flee to some of those Arab tribes that have accepted Islam until Allah provides His Messenger ﷺ with something to settle my debt. So I went out until I reached my dwelling. I placed my sword, my provision bag, my shield, and my sandals at my head, and I faced the horizon with my face. Whenever I slept for a while I would wake up, and when I saw that night was still upon me I would sleep until the first column of dawn broke. Then I wanted to depart, and there was a man running and calling: O Bilal, answer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So I went until I came to him, and there were four mounted camels with their loads upon them. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked permission, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Rejoice, for Allah has brought you the means to settle your debt." I praised Allah, may He be exalted, and he said: "Did you not pass by the four mounted camels?" I said: Yes. He said: "You have their necks and what is on them—clothing and food—as a gift sent to me by the chief of Fadak. Take them and pay your debt." I did so. I unloaded their burdens, then hobbled them, then went to give the call for the dawn prayer, until when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed, I went out to al-Baqi' and put my fingers in my ears and called out: Whoever has a debt owed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, let him come forward. I kept selling and paying until no debt remained owed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on earth, until there remained in my hand two uqiyyahs or one and a half uqiyyahs. Then I went to the mosque, and most of the day had passed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting alone in the mosque. I greeted him, and he said to me: "What happened with what you had?" I said: Allah has settled everything that was owed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and nothing remains. He said: "Is there any surplus?" I said: Yes. He said: "See that you relieve me of it, for I will not enter upon any of my family until you relieve me of it." No one came to us until evening. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed the evening prayer, he called me and said: "What happened with what you had?" I said: It is with me; no one came to us. He spent the night in the mosque until morning, and remained the second day until near the end of the day, when two riders came. I went with them and fed them and clothed them, until when he had prayed the evening prayer, he called me and said: "What happened with what you had?" I said: Allah has relieved you of it, O Messenger of Allah. He said takbir and praised Allah, may He be exalted, out of fear that death might overtake him while he still had that. Then I followed him until he came to his wives, and he greeted each wife one by one until he reached his sleeping place. That is what you asked me about.
