✧ On the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a man, but he showed cowardice. Then Muhammad b. Maslamah came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have never seen the like of today.' Muhammad b. Maslamah wept. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for well-being; for you do not know what trials you may face from them. When you meet them, say: O Allah, You are our Lord and their Lord, and our forelocks are in Your hand; You alone slay them. Then remain seated on the ground. When they overwhelm you, rise up and say Allahu akbar.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Tomorrow I shall certainly send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger and whom they love, who will not turn his back.' On the morrow he sent Ali, who was suffering from severe ophthalmia. He said, 'Go forth.' Ali said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I cannot see where I place my feet.' He spat into his eyes, tied the banner for him, and handed him the standard. Ali asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, for what shall I fight?' He replied, 'So that they testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. When they do that, they have protected their blood and wealth from me except by its right, and their reckoning is with Allah, Mighty and Majestic.'
