حَدَّثَنَا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ اللَّخْمِيُّ، نَا مُنَبِّهُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، نَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ. أَنَّ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ:
لَعَلَّكَ أَنْ يُنْسَأَ فِي أَجَلِكَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ مِمَّنْ يُؤَمَّرُ عَلَى عَشَرَةٍ حِينَ يَسْكُنُ النَّاسُ الْكُفُورَ، فَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تُؤَمَّرَنَّ عَلَى عَشَرَةٍ فَمَا فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُقَامُ رَجُلٌ عَلَى عَشَرَةٍ فَمَا فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا أَتَى اللهَ مَغْلُولًا يَدُهُ إِلَى عُنُقِهِ، وَلَا يَفُكُّهُ مِنْ غُلِّهِ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا عَدْلٌ إِنْ كَانَ عَدَلَ بَيْنَهُمْ، وَلَا تَعْمُرَنَّ الْكُفُورَ؛ فَإِنَّ عَامِرَ الْكُفُورِ كَعَامِرِ الْقُبُورِ

✧ Perhaps your lifespan will be extended until you are one of those put in command over ten when the people inhabit the villages. Beware of being put in command over ten or more, for no man is placed over ten or more but that he will come to God with his hand chained to his neck, and nothing will release him from that chain except justice, if he was just among them. And do not inhabit the villages, for the one who inhabits the villages is like the one who inhabits the graves.
