حَدَّثَنَا مُنْتَصِرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ، نَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَفْرِيقِيِّ، ثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَ:
قَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، الْغَدَ حِينَ بُويِعَ، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ، فَقَالَ: " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي قَدْ أَقَلْتُكُمْ رَأْيَكُمْ، إِنِّي لَسْتُ بِخَيْرِكُمْ، فَبَايِعُوا خَيْرَكُمْ "، فَقَامُوا إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالُوا: يَا خَلِيفَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ، أَنْتَ وَاللهِ خَيْرُنَا، فَقَالَ: " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّ النَّاسَ دَخَلُوا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ طَوْعًا وَكَرْهًا، فَهُمْ عُوَّاذُ اللهِ وَجِيرَانُ اللهِ، فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ لَا يَطْلُبَكُمُ اللهُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ ذِمَّتِهِ فَافْعَلُوا، إِنَّ لِي شَيْطَانًا يَحْضُرُنِي، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي قَدْ غَضِبْتُ فَاجْتَنِبُونِي، لَا أُمَثِّلُ بِأَشْعَارِكُمْ وَأَبْشَارِكُمْ، يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، تَفَقَّدُوا ضَرَائِبَ غِلْمَانِكُمْ، إِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلَحْمٍ نَبَتَ مِنْ سُحْتٍ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ، أَلَا وَرَاعُونِي بِأَبْصَارِكُمْ، فَإِنِ اسْتَقَمْتُ فَاتَّبِعُونِي، وَإِنْ زِغْتُ فَقَوِّمُونِي، وَإِنْ أَطَعْتُ اللهَ فَأَطِيعُونِي، وَإِنْ عَصَيْتُ اللهَ فَاعْصُونِي

✧ The next day after being given allegiance, Abu Bakr stood up and addressed the people, saying: "O people, I have relieved you of your opinion. I am not the best of you, so give allegiance to the best of you." They stood up to him and said: "O successor of the Messenger of Allah, you are, by Allah, the best of us." He said: "O people, people entered Islam willingly and unwillingly, so they are Allah's protected ones and His neighbors. If you can avoid Allah demanding anything of His protection from you, then do so. I have a devil that attends me, so if you see me angry, avoid me. I will not mutilate your hair and skins. O people, check the earnings of your servants, for it is not fitting for flesh grown from unlawful earnings to enter Paradise. Indeed, watch me with your eyes. If I am upright, follow me; if I deviate, correct me. If I obey Allah, obey me; if I disobey Allah, disobey me."
