حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، نَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى زَحْمَوَيْهِ، نَا ثَابِتٌ أَبُو حَمْزَةَ، ثَنَا كَثِيرٌ النَّوَّاءُ، عَنْ رِفَاعَةَ الْفِتْيَانِيِّ قَالَ:
دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الْمُخْتَارِ، فَلَمَّا أَنْ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ قَالَ: يَا أَبَا عُمَرَ أَلَا تُعِينُنَا عَلَى هَذَا الْكُرْسِيِّ، فَإِنَّهُ قَامَ عَنْهُ جِبْرِيلُ آنِفًا، قُلْتُ: بَلَى، أُعِينُكَ عَلَى أَنْ تُحَرِّقَهُ وَتَنْسِفَهُ فِي الْيَمِّ نَسْفًا، قَالَ رِفَاعَةُ: فَأَهْوَيْتُ بِيَدِي إِلَى قَائِمِ سَيْفِي، فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي: أَلَا أَقْتُلُ هَذَا الْكَذَّابَ، حَتَّى ذَكَرْتُ كَلِمَةَ أَخِي عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَمِقِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، يَقُولُ: مَنِ ائْتَمَنَ رَجُلًا عَلَى دَمِهِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَأَنَا مِنَ الْقَاتِلِ بَرِيءٌ، وَإِنْ كَانَ الْمَقْتُولُ كَافِرًا ".

✧ I entered upon al-Mukhtar, and when I was about to leave, he said: "O Abu 'Umar, will you not help us with this throne, for Gabriel has just left it?" I said: "Yes, I will help you by burning it and scattering it completely into the sea." Rifa'a said: I reached for the hilt of my sword and said to myself: "Should I not kill this liar?" Then I remembered the words of my brother 'Amr b. al-Hamiq that he heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Whoever entrusts a man with his life and then kills him, I am innocent of the killer, even if the victim is an unbeliever."
